Over the next week I will preview the 2012 season for the Rockies position by position. There have been some fan favorites jettisoned from the team and some new faces (albeit longer in the tooth) who have jumped on board.
Today we talk shortstop – and it will be short…so…STOP WHAT YOUR DOIN BECAUSE IM BOUT TO RUIN…
Previous: Catcher, first base, second base, third base
Players lost: While the vast majority of playing time at short obviously goes to Troy Tulowitzki five other players did play the position in 2011 and only Alfredo Amezaga is no longer with the team. The remaining five will need to find another position to play for or another team because Tulo is the man. Those other players were Thomas Field, Jonathan Herrera, Chris Nelson and Hector Gomez.
Players gained: For some reason the Rockies didn’t look to sign a shortstop?
Minor leagues: The Rockies do have a few prospects in the low minor league levels and they will either need to move positions or will be trade bait in the coming seasons. File away names like Trevor Story, Rosell Herrera and Josh Rutledge as names the Rockies might use to trade for pitching in coming years.
Who makes Opening Day roster: clap, clap, clapclapclap – TULO!
Who might come up during the year: If the Rockies are digging into their minor league system during 2012 it is not good news because Tulo is hurt and on the disabled list. For the Rockies to have any chance this year they need 155 games or more from Tulo.
Next up: Outfield

I think Story, Rutledge and Herrera are more likely to be moved to 2B, 3B, RF or LF before being traded. The Rockies just don’t trade top ten prospects, and all of them arguably are.

Agreed, especially with a dinosaurs playing 2nd and 3rd base.

Excited about Rutledge, obviously. I like the thought of him being the second baseman of the future. I’m tempering it with Story and Herrera. With Rockies’ prospects, I think I’ve decided to reserve complete judgment until they’ve been successful in at least Modesto. It’s so hard to get a good read on guys in Asheville and Casper.
