I can’t help but think that the baseball schedule is light today because the NFL draft is tonight. Football rules the United States and I hate it. I don’t hate football but I hate how all I hear about on the local sports radio is Broncos talk. I hate that Mike & Mike in the morning talk mostly football. I hate that ESPN had a three hour special to do nothing but talk about the NFL scheduled for 2012 (keep in mind teams already knew WHO they were playing but this special was to talk about WHEN they are going to play).
Maybe today is just a typical Thursday getaway day. But I like to blame the big guy whenever I can.
For some reason when I was looking at the slate of games today I started to think about the Rockies uniform: it’s timeless. For the most part. It isn’t over the top like the new Miami Marlins uni or stupid like many of the Houston Astros iterations, it’s clean, simple and for the most part perfect.
Except for the sleeveless variety, I have never liked sleeveless uniforms. And that includes basketball. Maybe because my guns are like those cheap water guns you can get at the local gas station that break after three uses and not like the AK-47 type guns you need to properly sport a sleeveless top?
The Rockies haven’t messed with the uniform much over the years and I think that is great. It is a great look. Has anything changed over the years?
I thought a cool way to compare the uniforms is to look at Eric Young Sr. versus Eric Young Jr.
Here they both are wearing the traditional white jersey with purple stripes. Looks almost the same in 2012 as it did in 1993 with the only difference being the number on the front.

The gray uniform are almost the same, too, again, except for the number on the front.

There is a caveat as the team did have purple pinstripes on its gray uniform from 2000-2011.
And there have been sleeveless versions, both in black and white.

Now they wear the sleeveless black tops with black undershirts but a few years ago they wore purple under their black sleeveless tops.
And there was once upon a time when those black jerseys did have sleeves.
And while some people hate them, I really like the purple uni’s the team is wearing.
And in saving the best for last here is the Rockies “future” uni circa 1999.
The Rockies weren’t the only team sporting these futuristic jerseys before the turn of the century. The Royals had one and Johnny Damon has the guns I am talking about that should be required to wear a sleeveless top.
Kid Griffey even had a silver glove and shoes to go with his Mariners future jersey.
The Diamondbacks, Pirates and Mets jerseys were just plain disgusting.

Here is Barry Bonds and his super sized head sporting a super sized “SF” jersey.
And finally the Twins and Brewers both used their lovable cartoon characters on their jerseys for those few games in 1999 and I think both are pretty cool.

There you have it. My mind wandering on a slow baseball day. If I could find one of those Brewers jerseys I would probably purchase it…and then hit the gym and work on my curls.

I miss the purple pinstripes on the road unis. Those were so classy. I’m not liking the “blank” road unis this year. Too bland.
As for the sleeveless jerseys, I like the black ones with the black undershirts but that’s it. I’m thankful they don’t use the white ones anymore (well, not for a while, now). I think with the black undershirt it gives the players the freedom of the sleeveless jersey but the aesthetics of a full jersey. Compression gear doesn’t constrict as bad as jersey material.
I love the purple jerseys! It’s a shame they don’t break out the purple caps to go along with it. I’m not sure what they’re saving those caps for.

Agreed, love the purple jerseys. I saw a guy at my gym last year sometime with an all purple hat with a single big “R” on the front in the Rockies font. It was sweet and I have never been able to find it. I wonder if it was super old or something. I love that shade of purple.

I hate the purple jerseys. They look like a slow pitch beer league softball team when they wear them. The sleeveless isn’t a bad alternative jersey, but the traditional home pinstripes look so good I don’t see why they need anything different. I also prefer the road pinstripes to the current look.
The team that never should have changed their look was the Brewers. The MB on the ballcap that looked like a mitt with a glove in it was classic. I can’t think of another expansion team (1960s on) with a better logo.

I’m indifferent to the purple unis. Normally I also hate the vests, but I’m convinced those black vests had a lot to do with that magic ’07 run. We can’t get rid of them now!
