Fantasy world: if the Rockies made the playoffs…

2007 was five years ago already.

With the new playoff format and the one game Wild Card game how would you fill out the Rockies lineup card? This is a fantasy land and the Rox made the playoffs AND are at home. You somehow got access to fill out the Rockies lineup…what does it look like?

Assuming rest is OK and you can pick any of the Rockies “starting” pitchers, what does your lineup look like? All current injuries apply. Here’s mine.

Leading off: as much as I want Dexter Fowler here I think his wrist is still enough to keep him out. I am putting Jordan Pacheco here and he is playing third.

Second is Josh Rutledge and he is playing second base. Even though Jim Tracy wasted a few months of great opportunities for Rutledge to log time at second he is thrown to the fire in the Wild Card game.

I read earlier this week that Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki were both healthy enough to play but with the season being over there was no reason for either to play the rest of the year. With that being said I am putting both of them into my lineup. CarGo hits third and Tulo is batting fourth. CarGo in left (yes, left) and Tulo at short.

In center field is Tyler Colvin and he is batting fifth.

Behind the plate is Wilin Rosario (and his poor D) with his big bat batting sixth.

Michael Cuddyer is also reportedly healthy enough to play. He was taking BP with the Rockies all this week and along with CarGo and Tulo there was talk that all three might play the final home game of the year. With him being healthy enough I have him at first base and batting seventh.

To wrap it up and batting eighth is Andrew Brown and he is playing right field. Charlie Blackmon is on alert and might enter the game at anytime, but Brown gets the start for me.

Pitching is Jeff Francis and keeping in line with what the Rockies have been doing all year I have informed Francis that he will basically get one time through the lineup. As much as starting pitchers generally do not like to get out of a routine I am following Francis with Jhoulys Chacin. Same deal for Chacin: one time through the lineup.

I am hoping for five or six innings between Francis and Chacin and then Matt Belisle and Rafael Betancourt are taking me the rest of the way. Belisle gets two innings and Betancourt gets one. If a third reliever is needed (…if…if…lol…”if”) then I have either Drew Pomeranz or Josh Roenicke ready depending on the situation. Clean inning? Pomeranz probably gets the nod and if I need a pitcher to come in mid-inning then it is Roenicke.

So my card is:
5 – Pacheco
4 – Rutledge
7 – Gonzalez
6 – Tulowitzki
8 – Colvin
2 – Rosario
3 – Cuddyer
9 – Brown
1 – Francis

What do you do? Leave a comment and let’s have some fun! Are you hesitant to use Tulo, CarGo or Cuddy since they haven’t played as much recently (or in Tulo’s case for months)?

Ok so I read this article and i’m thinking to myself…what’s the point of this? Sorry Travis, writing about Mickey Mouse would have been more appropriate at this point.

The Rockies aren’t making the playoffs, and the Rockies won’t make the playoffs in 2013 with Jim Tracy or Dan O’Dowd in ANY role with the Rockies organization.

My prediction is that there won’t be any major changes to the Rockies in 2013. Real change won’t come until 2014 and the only reason is because I think the Monforts will react to the sharp drop in attendance and merchandise sales in 2013. I expect a 15-20% drop in attendance at Coors in 2013.

The point is to have fun…all we do is piss and moan around here (for good reason) and that isn’t anyway to go through life. So what if? What if the Rockies had made the playoffs? They were picked by many to start the year to contend and it just didn’t work.

And my son loves Mickey Mouse. There would certainly be worse things to write about.

How about this…how about a fantasy GM, Manager, and Owner. Now that’s a fantasy I would like discussed.

          I’ll play

GM – Billy Beane – Some people may think the man is overrated because moneyball was more about Zito, Mulder and Hudson than Scott Hatteberg but the man still manages to field a competitive team. Maybe his true talent is in finding/drafting/trading for young pitchers. His current staff sure looks nice.

Manager – Ryne Sandberg – Don’t really know what his managerial style is like but he has put in his dues, has a playing history which every player in the clubhouse will respect and I’ve really liked the results of the recent players turned managers (Scioscia, Mattingly, Girardi, Gibson). Plus maybe some of the 1,000s of Cubs fans that invade Coors every year will be converted.

Owner – Cuban or Kronke – Billionaires that care about winning, enough said.

          Why stop there though….

Hitting Coach – Tell Todd to retire and take the job. The team has hit well this year and its hard to ignore the progress of Fowler and Colvin but the team still can’t hit on the road and Cargo is still too streaky. I know he has a lot of moving parts in his swing but it doesn’t seem like Lansford has been able to make adjustments as quick as I’d hope.

Pitching Coach – Dave Duncan would never take the job but a boy can dream right? Maybe Greg Maddux is bored in retirement and wants to work with his old buddy Sandberg?

3rd base coach – Brad Ausmus. Primarily just to help Rosario learn to be a major league catcher but also because our base running has been a train wreck this year.

1st base coach – Ricky Henderson! or maybe EY Sr – passion, energy, attitude and somebody who can hopefully teach Dexter to use his speed.

Fantasy eh? There are a number of areas where I disagree, but the main thing is, depending upon opponent, you can’t start Francis. I think at the moment I would start Chacin….and let him go as long as he is pitching effectively, screw pitch counts. Jeff just doesn’t have the stuff to start an important playoff game anymore, unless you get to choose the Cubs or Astros as your opponent. Yeah, I guess everyone agrees that Belisle and Betancourt finish up. If this were a one game playoff, then all relievers come into play and I would mix and match to get thru innings if need be, Roenicke and Ottavino are probably my first choices if I need middle guys, but I’d have them on a short leash. Frankly, I think our middle relief is pretty poor and you need to work hard just to get out of the trouble inning, mixing and matching up in situations probably the only thing you could do.

I like Blackmon, especially his speed, so I’d go with him over Brown and put him in CF. He bats leadoff and I shift Pacheco to the eight spot to hit in the guys who get on in front of him. Francis gets the start because I don’t trust Chacin enough yet.

    8 – Blackmon
    4 – Rutledge
    7 – Gonzalez
    6 – Tulowitzki
    9 – Colvin
    2 – Rosario
    3 – Cuddyer
    5 – Pacheco
    1 – Francis

I know I’m an unabashed fanboy, but Rosario has hit over .300 with an ops of over 900 the last two months, I’m sorry, he’s hitting cleanup and Tulo who hasn’t played is hitting 5th. I don’t really have an issue with the rest of Kevin’s lineup. I think it’s about the best we could do with the injuries and/or horrific defenders everywhere.
