Wow, sounds like the Rockies are winning in spite of Tulo. He must really be putting up some garbage numbers in the few games he's actually been able to play. How many is that? Like 10? Good greif, let's trade him for whoever we can get. I bet there might be some team out there desperate enough for a warm body on the field to take him off our hands

I love watching Arenado play, but he absolutely needs to get his OBP up. He hardly ever walks. Maybe experience and maturity will take care of this. I hope so. Also, as much as I root for EY to succeed, I'm still not convinced he has major league skills.

It does seem like we've done very poorly evaluating top-of-the-draft arms under O'Dowd. We did better pre-O'Dowd, getting Jake Westbrook and Jamey Wright, but awful since.

Still, with offensive selections like Jayson Nix, Ian Stewart, and Chris Nelson, it's not like he's great at offensive selections either. Tulo's the only good one (Helton was drafted before O'Dowd).

There seems to be a consensus top three players (two pitchers and a bat). I think we should trust other teams' evaluative abilities and pick whichever of the three falls to us, rather than having O'Dowd try to outsmart the league.

I'll leave this one to someone else as I don't follow the draft or college baseball at all. My only hope is that they draft the best available player, regardless of his position.

The MLB draft is coming up in a few weeks and I was wondering who you think the Rockies will take with the 3rd choice. They botched their pick the only time they drafted higher with Greg Reynolds at 2. Do you think the Rockies go with pitching or hitting. The Rockies have drafted in the top 8 six times by my count, 2 position players and 4 pitchers with those picks. Tulo and Helton were the position players; Doug Million, Matt Harrington, Greg Reynolds and Casey Weathers were the pitchers. Looks to me like they should probably go with a bat and not an arm.

That is an excellent stat reference! I would love to know the actual percentages, but of course am too lazy to look.

Fangraphs data:

http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=20&type=8&season=2013&month=3&season1=2013&ind=0&team=19&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=16,d

Look for starters below Helton. Arenado is in a virtual tie, but based on age, who do you expect to improve going forward, and who do you expect to fade? Fowler and Rosario are lower, though not appreciably so, but do you really think either of them should hit eighth? Jerking guys around when they slump is EXACTLY what screwed up Fowler in the past!

We know Fowler and Rosario are, long-term, among the five best hitters on this team. Fowler's OBP over the last few years is well above that of anyone else not named Tulo or Cargo:

I'd bat Dex third before I batted him eighth. And Rosario is a TERRIBLE guy for a spot where he won't see good pitches, as he swings regardless. He's a power bat who we want to groom for the five-hole, and we need to show confidence.

Helton is the one guy we don't worry about "screwing up in the long-term", because he's done after this year. Book it.

You say I "dismiss", but I'm not dismissing, I'm countering. You say "speculation", but the way you use it, I might as well bat Tulo and Cargo 8-9 because it's only "speculation" that they'll get another hit ever again for the rest of their careers!

Some speculation is better informed than others!

I agree that bunting is way overrated. It especially drives me crazy when a manager bunts a guy from second to third with nobody out, especially when the 2nd base runner will most likely score on a hit. I don't like giving up outs. I believe that in one of his books, Earl Weaver noted that the odds of scoring from 2nd with nobody out are better than scoring from 3rd with one out. I hope Weiss doesn't take a page from the book of the previous and unlamented manager, Jim Tracey.

I appreciate that you simply dismiss everything I say. It is very clear that Helton is not the worst bat in the lineup this season. The idea of putting Helton eighth is based on pure speculation. Just like I'm speculating that speed would be valuable out of that position. You seem to put a lot value on player's potential, which is perfectly fine, but you can't have it both ways by dismissing reality. Sure, Rutledge, Arenado, and Rosario have bright futures, but you have no idea when those futures become the present. Yes, they should plan for the entire season, but that doesn't mean turning a blind eye to massive slumps (Rosario and Fowler) and not mixing things up. That's like sitting at a blackjack table, continuing to lose money, but refusing to leave because "I know the next hand is going to be a good one." There has to be a balance between strategic and tactical thinking. Rosario is 4 for 40 (.100) for May. Fowler is 3 for 34 (.088) since his "minor" hip injury. Two weeks is enough time (maybe too much) to simply sit pat and say "well, they'll come out of it." Wait long enough and it won't matter. Like I said - when Rosario starts hitting again or Helton stops driving in runs, then they should make a change.

Regarding the Rockies latest moves - who the hell is filling Francis' spot in the rotation since they brought up Scahill, a reliever? And it's nice that they DFA'd Brignac - when does Herrera go?
